EVU Talks 2008: 'vegetarianism, the ultimate animal welfare'

It is a well-known fact that the meat industry is the basis for a mind boggling massacre right across our planet.

Just one example: According to an estimate in Belgium, a country with only 10 421 000 inhabitants, about one million animals are being killed per month in 2007. For 2006 the deadly result reads as follows: 10 740 792 pigs, 819 434 cattle, 29 012 sheep, 41 195 lambs, 1 281 goats, 10 062 horses, 398 foals. Live imports, poultry, and fish still have to be added to this list of horrors: A shocking massacre is taking place in just one single country, and there are parts of the world where meat consumption is even much higher than in Belgium.

It is true that on national and international levels efforts are indeed being made to slaughter all these animals in a ‘humane’ way. ‘Humane’? Why not try to square a circle! By no stretch of imagination can the ultimate violence, namely the capital punishment for an innocent sentient being with a strong sense of survival, be executed in a humane manner!

Animals have been on this earth before humans appeared. They are not our walking larders or commodities to base financial profit and speculation on. They have a right to live just like we do and, as Leonardo da Vinci said, the day will come when the killing of an animal will be seen as a big a crime as killing a human being.

During the 2008 EVU Talks we want to discuss the benefits which the compassion of each and every vegetarian brings to the animal world and find out what possibilities the vegetarian community has to promote our lifestyle which shows more respect for non-human beings than any other one.

Please register until 15 March 2008 and let us also know in case you want to give a lecture or take part in the debate actively in any other way as soon as possible – e-mail president(at)euroveg.eu We are looking forward to hearing from you.

Best regards
