Dear friends,

The 2007 topic of the EVU Talks, organized by the European Vegetarian Union, will be
'The veggie answer to world hunger'

Only recently, on 7 September 2006, Dr Jacques Diouf, Director-General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), admitted that "Reducing hunger and extreme poverty is a prerequisite for achieving the international community's Millennium Development Goals. We stand very little chance of achieving the rest of the goals - environment, education, child mortality, maternal health, gender equality, HIV/AIDS - unless the first MDG is achieved."

Unfortunately no international body or national government has so far shown any interest in researching the potential of vegetarianism in alleviating global hunger, stopping and possibly reversing the destruction of the environment and contributing to a better, cleaner and more compassionate world in general.

The European Vegetarian Union wants to talk about these officially forgotten facts and invites all interested people to join the EVU Talks 2007 and to contribute to the formulation of the press release to be sent out after the event. We gladly accept inputs, remarks and comments and at this moment can still accommodate speakers who want to share their opinion about the topic.

UN Secretary-General Kofi A. Annan: "We will have time to reach the Millennium Development Goals - worldwide and in most, or even all, individual countries - but only if we break with business as usual."

A good start to 'break with business as usual' would be to stop ignoring the many benefits of vegetarianism.
