Since the EVU has encountered problems
regarding the payment of subscription fees, the
Treasurer advised the AGM that some members
have already been taken off the member list and
that another screening will have to take place.
Marcel Hebbelinck, past President, suggested
that personal contact should be made to those
who had not paid in order to find out what the
problem was. A liaison person in the respective
countries should be found.

of Deputy Secretary was elected unanimously.

TOP 11: Label – Report
Renato Pichler, responsible for the EVU
V-Label, gave his report and showed the first
available promotion material (stickers and napkins).
Hildegund Scholvien, responsible for the
label in Germany, informed that there was some
reluctance by German firms to work with the
label.
Hans Bosch from the NVB said that companies
had approached the Dutch Vegetarian
organisation in order to being granted use of the
label.
Stephen Walsh from the UK Vegan Society
stressed that the label system represented great
potential.
There was general agreement that the label
should be promoted strongly and with some
urgency since many firms are creating their own
company logo. Renato Pichler said that it is
important to emphasize the expertise of the vegetarian
organisations and the importance of neutral,
independent control-systems.
Igor Bukovsky recommended informing the
food industry about the latest WHO-statements
in which the importance of fruit and vegetables
is underlined. He said that companies should be
contacted and motivated to use the label and
consumers should be informed about the many
advantages of such a system.
Organisation of a label workshop is planned
for next year, in connection with the next AGM.

Secretary Report
This is my second Secretary Report.
Since the first one in July last year, the EVU
has been quite busy, as the following list
shows:
1. Members:
In the mentioned time frame the EVU community
welcomed 7 organisations and 20 individual
members.
The EVU-mailing list “Vegetarian Community”
now has 25 members.
2. Newsletters:
The Secretariat sent out
8 in English
6 in French
5 in German
and a variety of information and alerts to
members, interested partners and friends.
3. Magazine “European Vegetarian”
- The magazine has been distributed regularly every three months.
- Since it was not possible for Renato Pichler to take care of the layout for free any longer (in addition to his own two magazines Vegi-
Info), it is now done by someone else.
- In this context I would like to thank Karen Trevayne for her wonderful help in editing the manuscripts.
4. Press Work:
EVU has distributed to international and
some national press offices:
10 Dec 2002: EU Animal Transport
Consultation: Comments by the European
Vegetarian Union and Farmed Animal Action
UK (English only)
14 Jan 2003: Remarks regarding the
International Green Week, Berlin - in co-operation
with Vegetarier-Bund Deutschlands and
the Swiss Union for Vegetarianism (in English
and German)
11 June 2003 UK: An end to ritual slaughter?
(in English only)
25 June 2003 - Avegetarian way of life can
lead to the alleviation of world hunger (in
English, French and German)
There were articles about my work in some
Belgian papers. Articles about the EVU, or
mentioning the organisation, appeared in the
“European Voice”, Brussels (paper for the
”Eurocrats”), the “Europe et Liberté”, Paris,
“La Province”, Belgium, and some of this
paper’s branches. Many of the EVU contributions
were mentioned in the periodicals of
member- and other organisations.
Since our press officer has resigned, this
position has been vacant for some time and the
work is done by the Secretariat.
Website:
- Christian W. took over as webmaster in
March. However, since the necessary work
on the website proved to be too wide-ranging,
a new one needed to be built with outside
help.
-
5. Important working contacts
- Already existing working contacts were developed and intensified and new ones initiated.
- EU: The EVU’s contribution to the European Convention led to a continuous flow of useful EU information.
- The EVU is mentioned on the Commission's database “Consultation, the European Commission and Civil Society (CONECCS)
http://europa.eu.int/comm/civil_society/coneccs/index_en.htm
, which gives information on non-profit civil society organisations
organised at a European level. CONECCS is a voluntary information tool, a “who-is-who” and who-does-what” in the representation
of European civil society interests.
- We have created a mailing-list on EU matters through which members can inform one another about important events in that field.
6. Campaigns and Events
a. past
1 November 2002: EVU Symposium in
Brussels VEGETARIANS IN AN
ENLARGED EUROPEAN UNION - HOW
TO PROMOTE VEGETARIANISM IN
EUROPE. The EVU resolution, which has
been sent to the press, raised a lot of interest
and can be seen on the Convention website (in
English, French and German ).

Brussels.
17 May 2003: I attended the Veggie Pride
in Paris and held a stand for the EVU (distributing
material and selling pins)
21-17 June 2003: Vegetarian Festival in

find a satisfying result.

the possibility to attend the Veggie Pride).
7.Administration:
The Secretariat has drafted and the board
has approved new versions of the:
- rules for organising congresses
- website rules
8. Interesting developments
-
In Spring 2003, a Belgian health insurance
company (Mutualité Libres ) has distributed
a very nice brochure about vegetarianism
which has found remarkable interest, even
in the Belgian medical press. This project
had been developed with the Belgian vegetarian
organisations and the EVU.
- The American Dietetic Association (ADA)
has recently published a policy paper stressing
the benefits of a vegetarian and vegan
diet. We shall report about that vegetarian
“milestone” in our magazine 4.2003.
9. My aims
Since I have reached the ceiling of what I
can do with the present help, I would like to
find more assistance. In this context I hope that
additional Working Groups can be created
with the aim of better liaising with members
working on the same issues (nutrition, animal
rights, ecology etc.) and by that sharing
resources.
Generally speaking, I intend to keep my
eyes open and grab all opportunities that next
term can offer.

EVU Financial Report 2002
2002 was a rather positive financial year
for the EVU. We received a legacy which
gave us the opportunity to extend the registration
of the label to almost all European
countries (except a few that are not part of the
Madrid agreement) and to start with promotional
material for the label (mostly purchased
in 2003). We were again able to distribute
four magazines per year, and bought
some equipment for the Secretariat.
The income through the label is slightly
increasing. After the consolidation of the
basic structures, we intend to intensify our
promotional work. The label progress in
Switzerland should be an example for others
to follow.
2002 was the first year with the EURO as
common currency. From my point of view it
is great progress, as it makes my work much
easier. We still have the Swiss account in
Swiss Francs, but that represents only a small
part of our total banking.
Since the beginning of July 2003, new
regulations for international money transfers
have been in existence within the EU.
They make it much simpler and cheaper
to send money abroad, only EURO so far, but
that is the main part of all our transactions.
Nevertheless we intend to slightly
increase the annual EVU subscriptions. The
last augmentation was approved in 1997, in
Bussolengo. After the introduction of the
EURO there was even a small reduction. In
the meantime the prices for almost everything
went up, especially for printing and layout
costs. Our main purpose now is to have
round figures and enable our members to
send small amounts in an envelope. We also
want to reorganise the classification of our
member societies according to their member
numbers in a clearly arranged pattern.
Together with the Secretary we made a
revision revision of our member list, based on
payments. We removed certain addresses
from our member list, namely those of individual
members who had not paid for more
than a year and full members who had not
paid for more than two years. All these people/
organisations had not explained their reasons
for not paying and so we had no other
choice but to clean our list up. A similar
action will take place this year, after a final
reminder.
At the moment we have in our address list:
|
assistants/helper
|
4
|
|
associate organisations
|
10
|
|
co-operation partners
|
5
|
|
member families
|
10
|
|
individual members
|
76
|
|
individual life members
|
10
|
|
exchange magazine
|
1
|
|
member societies
|
58
|
|
Total
|
174
|
Our main aims for the future are, as far as
finances are concerned: to find out more
about available grants and to make use of
these sources, to look for sponsors, try to sell
ads and magazine-subscriptions, to intensify
the promotional work for the label, to prepare
standardised material to be used everywhere
in Europe in order to boost our label-project.
