The first senior citizens' home awarded the V-label

"As much independence as you like, as much service as you appreciate” – that is the motto of the Gemeinschaft Deutsche Altenhilfe GmbH/Wohnstift Trippstadt. Thirty years ago, Marianne was so attracted by this philosophy that she moved in and has never regretted her decision. She is now 95 and one of the 120 residents of a home where the requirements of all vegetarians can be accommodated, from ovo-lacto-vegetarian to vegan or raw food choices – all culinary wishes are fulfilled.

Since the manager Dr. Hans- Juergen Wilhelm was interested in making the unique vegetarian options of the Trippstadt residence known to the public, he applied for the V-label of the European Vegetarian Union. After some discussions with the EVU-label representative for Germany, Hildegund Scholvien, and some adaptations in the kitchen of the home, the label was officially presented on 23 November 2003.

During a reception, EVU Board member and past president Prof. Marcel Hebbelink gave the inaugural speech and talked about the advantages of a vegetarian diet, especially in the later years of life. The residents enjoyed the talk and the management was proud about the awarding of the logo, which certifies officially that in the dining hall of “Wohnstift Trippstadt” controlled vegetarian food of the finest quality is served.

Also Chef Michael Jansen is pleased about the V-label because he considers cooking under the EVU regulations (no battery eggs, no hidden ingredients like gelatine or rennet etc). a welcome challenge. With the help of 16 assistants, he has already prepared vegetarian meals for 15 years and therefore only very few changes in his kitchen became necessary in order to respect EVU guidelines. “Vegetarian cooking demands a lot of creativity”, he says and underlines that he always uses only seasonal and organic fresh fruit and vegetables which are carefully steamed and served almost without salt. “Organic vegetables à la nature are delicious”, he explains.

After the presentation of the label by Hildegund Scholvien, the plaque (a green “V” on a yellow background) was placed next to the entrance of the dining hall - clearly visible to all.

It is to be expected that the residents of GDA Wohnstift Trippstadt will enjoy this unique and healthy diet for a long time to come because the longevity of vegetarians is well documented. After all, vegetarians do live longer, don’t they? Marianne nods, smiling.
