Some good news from Austria

At the beginning of December 1998, the 19 th vegetarian restaurant in Vienna opened its doors to the public the third vegan restaurant in the whole of Austria. The restaurant will be open seven days a week and even at night. It is situated directly behind the main building of the university in the City Centre.

In addition, a vegan confectioner's shop will open on January 1 st , 1999. The shop will be run by two professional confectioners (whose child has been vegan since birth, by the way) and will begin baking cakes and traditional Austrian pastries.

There is also a second vegan mailorder company in Austria now.

Also, a VEGAN society was founded in Austria which will celebrate its founding by a vegan buffet on December 14 th in the parliament.

The demonstrations against the cruelty of animal circuses in Austria were successful the animal acts involving wild animals such as elephants, tigers, lions, hyenas, bears and zebras were eliminated from the programmmes. Dogs, geese, horses and camels continue to be used in circus acts.

All nine presidents of the Austrian federal states agreed that from the year 2005, circus acts involving lions, tigers, reptiles and amphibians will no longer be permitted. Until that time, stricter regulations regarding the treatment and training of these animals will apply.
