First of all I want to thank you for your patience and help!

You know that, as I am a full-time teacher, all the work of the EVU office has to be done in the evenings, on weekends and during the holidays. The interest in a natural and healthy life is growing steadily and ever increasing amounts of letters, e-mail and phone-calls have to be answered. The limited time at my disposal. just does not allow me to thank all new (associate, life) members for becoming members and supporting the EVU. That’s why I would like to welcome and thank here all the new members, especially the life members who place their confidence in the work of the EVU.

On the index page you will find the names of the generous donators who with there financial contribution assure the publication of the next issues of the EVU News. Thanks to them too as well as to our many loyal members, who continue to show their co-operation by having already paid their contribution for 1997.

A lot of time and energy has been lost in fruitless discussions with the Italian organisers of the 6th European Vegetarian Congress because of organisational problems. After long and intensive negotiations the EVU Congress will definitely take place in Bussolengo/Italy. The conditions remain the same as published before. The EVU has withdrawn from the organisation and the AVI (Associazione Vegetariana Italiana) is taking full responsibility for the organisation of the congress upon itself. Please contact the Italian congress office for any information desired about the program, speakers, cheaper accommodation and excursions.

The AGM (Annual General Meeting) of the EVU has been planned for Sunday, 21st of September 1997, Bussolengo.

I am very glad to be able to offer you some important articles in this issue. Not long ago I spoke to a vegetarian medical doctor who was convinced that animal experiments are still necessary to guarantee ‘progress’ in medicine. Therefore I thank Dr. Rambeck for his enlightening article on the very sad chapter of animal and consequently human suffering.

Hoping that you enjoy reading the EVU News I send you best wishes from Switzerland

Sigrid De Leo (SDL)
Hon. Secretary of the EVU
