More people die of the disorder on Monday in Scotland than any other day of the week, according to new research by scientists at the statistics division of the National Health Service and the University of Glasgow. Researchers discovered the anomaly, which they suspect may be connected to weekend drinking, while studying deaths from the disease from 1986-1995. They found an excess of deaths from coronary heart disease outside hospital on Mondays among people with no previous history of coronary heart disease as it was written in a report in The British Medical Journal. More than three percent of men and women died of the disease on Mondays in comparison to other days of the week. According to the researchers, the Monday peak in deaths from coronary heart disease in Scotland may be partly attributable to increased drinking at the weekend, although other mechanisms, such as work-related stress, may be important.
